What is the lifespan of an Ikea mattress?

It all depends on what mattress you choose, but IKEA suggests that your mattress be changed every 8-10 years. This will ensure your comfort.

IKEA offers a 25 year guarantee on their mattresses. This covers defects in material or workmanship.

IKEA will repair or replace any mattress that is damaged or worn if you can’t afford to buy a brand new one.

If you want to know more about IKEA mattresses, you might also be interested in reading up on the IKEA mattress return policy, IKEA pillow & duvet return policy, and if IKEA sells Murphy beds.

Ikea Mattresses

IKEA has a wide range of products online. However, they are more focused on selling in brick-and-mortar stores. This allows for a completely new shopping experience. IKEA beds are not shipped free, unlike many other manufacturers. This is why most people prefer to visit their stores or showrooms and see the product, test it out, then buy it.

Although this is a Swedish brand, usually a significant amount of products is made in the country where the store is, they offer a different business model, they cooperate with local brands to cut the costs. Hence, you do not need to worry about how long your mattress has traveled to get to you, how long is in packaging, or what if something happens in transportation, because it was here all the time.

IKEA currently offers mattresses that are made from foam, latex, hybrid and springs. Although their prices are generally lower than average, this does not mean that they offer mattresses of inferior quality or durability. These mattresses also come with a 25-year warranty which is longer than what the industry standard is.

Currently, there are seven spring mattresses in IKEA’s offer, and on their website, you can fill a questionnaire to see which bed is recommended for your features and needs.

An innerspring mattress has two main advantages: it offers excellent support and doesn’t heat up at night due to its spring structure that allows air to circulate. At the same time, those would be its main advantages in comparison to the popular memory foam beds. IKEA has matching toppers and foundations for innerspring mattresses. They are durable and last a lifetime. The only potential drawback of this collection is that not a single model comes in all standard mattress sizes, they are usually made in three or four dimensions.

The seven innerspring beds we will be talking today are:

  • Hasvag
  • Haugesund
  • Haugsvar
  • Hesstun
  • Hjellestad
  • Holmsbu
  • Husvika

Hesstun Mattress

While the previous model had almost the same structure, IKEA Hesstun bed comes with a significant improvement because the layer of individually wrapped pocket coils is doubled in this bed. In the first layer, pockets are in their regular size, 6 inches high, while in the other they used the mini ones (2.5 inches thick) which double the comfort and resilience. Both steel coins are made of steel and are highly responsive to even the slightest movement. There are two layers of foam on top, one is 1.8PCF cold foam and the other is 1.7PCF polyurethane foam. It is 12.5 inches tall and weighs in at 63 pounds.

The bed comes in two sizes: medium and firm. It feels very firm. Although it comes with tho coats of coils, this bed is not suitable for heavyweight sleepers, because it tends to develop indentations after a while in the areas where your weight is concentrated. This bed is not as supportive as the rest of IKEA’s beds and will feel less firm for heavyweight sleepers.

Unlike the previous spring beds we mentioned, this one does not come rolled up in a box, which has its advantages and disadvantages. While there would be no waiting for the mattress to regain its shape fully, it is not so practical to carry it around or move through narrow corridors or bedroom door frames. Remember that IKEA charges shipping and that a car or a van can hardly transport this mattress.

Ikea: A Brief History

This Swedish brand was founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad, who used his initials, the first letter of a farm where he grew up (Elmtaryd) and the first letter of his hometown Agunnaryd (Sweden), to create this simple, yet brilliant name which is now known worldwide. Ingvar Kamprad, a 17-year-old carpenter in 1943, started the furniture business five years later. In 1958, Almhult in Sweden opened the first IKEA furniture store. In the 1960s, IKEA opened its first stores in Norway and Denmark. They continued their expansion across Europe through the 1970s and 1980s. There were 424 IKEA stores in 52 countries at the close of 2018. The number is steadily increasing as the company expands across the globe.

The company’s design is distinctive, and it is modern, minimal, clean, contemporary, and Nordic. The list could go on. The design is so simple, yet genius, easy to match and fit in into interior of every home, and their low prices are the best part. Politics and values which IKEA nurtures for decades enabled everyone to have a stylish home, furnished and decorated with taste, regardless of their budget limitations. The broad range of different products was additionally expanded with restaurants which serve traditional Swedish food.

Husvika Mattress Review

The Husvika is a spring mattress designed specifically for use in daybeds or children’s beds. The Husvika measures 5 1/4 inches high and is only available in twin sizes. It’s not recommended for couples or adults looking for a bigger bed such as a King size or a Queen size. However, it can be used for daybeds, guest beds, or a kid’s bed.

  • Mattress Type: Coil spring
  • Feel: Firm
  • Sinkage: Minimal, “on top of the bed” feel
  • Best for: Kids, stomach sleepers, back sleepers

Nest Bedding offers a Big Kids Bed, or BKB for short. BKB is a mattress made for children who weigh less than 120 pounds. The BKB is a mattress made of foam, with a similar firm feeling to the Husvika. BKB features both a cooling cover, CertiPUR US certified materials and a natural fire barrier.

Hasvag Mattress

This is IKEA’s basic bed. It offers the perfect combination of firm and soft sleeping surfaces. The bed is available in 3 sizes and measures 8 1/4 inches (21 cm) thick.

Hasvag mattress combines a base layer of 5 inches thick steel Bonnell springs and a layer of 2 inches of polyurethane foam in yellow color, to provide enough support without being too firm or uncomfortable to sleepers. It is made from a cotton-polyester blend for a stretchy covering. This bed is designed so that it does need to be turned around or flipped, it can be used only on one side during its lifespan.

We highly recommend this mattress to sleepers who love the medium level of firmness, and those who prefer sleeping on their back or stomach. This mattress is the most affordable one at IKEA, starting with only $120 for a twin size, and since it comes with 25 years of warranty, we can surely say that it is worthy of a shot.

In the construction of this bed, they used individually wrapped steel pocket coils which move along as your body moves, and there is also a layer of polyurethane foam for comfort. Because they are able to isolate movements, the coils that have been individually wrapped make this bed a favorite among couples. As a top layer of this 10 inches thick bed, they placed a sheet of stretchy fabric. It is important to note that the mattress’s increased airflow means it will not heat up if you sleep hot.

It also comes in a box, with off-gassing, and needs two to three days to settle, after that it can be used without the need to be flipped or rotated, and those pieces of information also stand for most of their other spring models.

Steel coils in this mattress will not be supportive enough for heavier sleepers; hence we recommend this mattress to lightweight sleepers or children. Besides a few sizing options, this one also comes in the firm and medium firm level, and many sleepers reported that they are truly firm, so if you prefer a more supportive sleep surface, without sinking in and struggling when switching sleep positions, this one could be the one. Stomach sleepers will especially love it since this is exactly what they are looking for; however several of them reported that this one feels perhaps too firm and that they prefer using it with a topper, so keep that in mind and pay a visit to IKEA to test it out. Back sleepers could also benefit from its firmness, while side sleepers should avoid it and stick to softer mattresses if they want to stay away from painful shoulders.

Is it a good idea to buy an Ikea mattress?

The best perk about IKEA products, especially mattresses, is their low price-point. IKEA mattresses come with a limited warranty of 25 years. They also have good return and sleep trials policies. IKEA mattresses are lower-quality than higher-end mattresses at a more expensive price. IKEA might be the right choice for you if you are looking for a mattress that can last for several months or isn’t too expensive.

Here’s my star ratings for the IKEA mattresses.

Are Ikea Beds Comfortable?

This is a funny question, right? Mattresses are like coffee orders –everyone has their opinion on what the best kind is and they stick to it. The point is, everybody is different, and when it comes to sleeping, it can be a very personal choice for what people find comfortable. IKEA mattresses are a well-known brand that sells furniture and other home products at a lower price. You’re buying a well-known company and they are comparable to their competition. If you have an IKEA in your local area, go check out their mattresses in-store and see for yourself!

Hasvag Mattress Review

The basic IKEA spring mattress. It is offered in twin, full, and queen size.. It’s still a thick mattress (8 1/4 inches for IKEA). Stretch fabric at the top of this mattress is designed to move with you. This should maximize comfort and support. This bed is designed to only be used on one side.

  • Type of Mattress: Coil spring
  • Sinkage: Medium
  • Best for: Budget shoppers, Side sleepers with back pain
  • This is not the right product for couples

Are you interested in another option? I’ve got an alternative for you. Allow me to introduce you to the Sweet Night Island. The SweetNight, which is a combination of innerspring coils and bouncy foam, makes it an excellent choice for couples or mixed sleepers. This mattress is quite affordable and will also offer some great support and pressure relief to the lower back region.

Amsosen Mattress Review

The Amsosen mattress is a medium-firm gel memory foam mattress. The gel helps the mattress to mold to your body, similar to traditional memory foam, but also draws heat from the body to create a cooler sleeping experience. The Amsosen is 9 7/8 inches thick, so it’s a little taller than some of the other IKEA foam mattresses.

  • Mattress Type: Gel memory foam
  • Feel: Medium-firm
  • Sinkage Medium
  • For: Stomach Sleepers

My alternative recommendation for the Amsosen would be the Sweet Night Sunkiss memory foam mattress. Although the Sunkiss uses gel memory foam to provide pressure relief and cooling it also has two firmnesses. One side of the mattress is firm and the other is soft, so the mattress is essentially two in one. The firm side is recommended for side sleepers, while the firm side would be best for stomach or back sleepers. Sunkiss has a washable and removable cover that can be removed to keep your mattress clean.

Haugesund Mattress Review

Haugesund’s bed features individually wrapped pocket springs, which move in their own way and can be adjusted to your body. Additionally, the response coils are individually wrapped, which helps absorb movements so you have good motion isolation and don’t disturb someone who is sharing your bed, whether a partner or a pup.

  • Type of Mattress: Coil spring
  • Sinkage: Minimal, “on top” of the bed feel

If you’re curious about an alternate option, look no further than the Brooklyn Bedding Bowery Hybrid. Bowery Hybrid is made up of memory foams and polyurethane, on top of pocketed coils. This mattress, like the Haugesund’s, has a medium firm feel. It’s great for couples because of its mobility, edge support and bounce. These same factors also make it a nice option for combo sleepers.Though a bit more expensive than the Haugesund, this mattress could be all you need and more.

Recommendations

From the reviews above, you could have noticed that there is a certain pattern, almost all mattresses are described to be on the medium to firmer side, they behave similarly, their terms and constructions are alike, but there are some small, and not insignificant, differences between them. The best thing about IKEA mattresses? You can either try them out at their locations around the globe, or you can use their benefits of a free trial period to sleep in your own home.

We can highly recommend this mattress to the following categories of sleepers:

  • When it comes to different sleep positions, without a doubt, these beds will fulfill most needs of back and stomach sleepers, but there are some models which can be suitable for side sleepers too.
  • IKEA mattresses should be avoided by heavy-weight people, but those of average or light weight can still enjoy the mattress without indentations and sagging.
  • Anyone who is young, or renting a place, for example, students or sleepers on a budget, will be satisfied with this bed.

Hjellestad Mattress

They used a mix of materials like polyamide, cotton and polyester to cover the mattress. Besides that, this bed comes with an additional, protective cover which has one interesting feature, it comes with handles which ease the moving of the mattress, and this cover can is removable and machine washable. It has a zipper, so when the bed is placed where it is wanted, it can easily be unzipped and removed.

The bed is not shipped in a box so it can be difficult to transport. IKEA also charges shipping. Although this bed may be a little more expensive than others, it is still cheaper than most spring beds from bedding manufacturers.

Myrbacka Mattress Review

The Myrbacka also has a layer of memory foam, but it is two inches thicker than the Matrand. For temperature regulation and softness, the thick layer of memory foam has wool filled. The Myrbacka is similar to the Morgedal. It has comfort zones which target the hips and shoulder.

  • Type of Mattress: Foam
  • You will feel: Soft and plush
  • Sinkage: Significant, “stuck in bed” feel
  • Not Good for: Stomach sleepers

The Novilla Bliss 10-inch memory foam mattress is a good alternative. This mattress is marketed by Novilla as being the best value memory foam mattress. I agree with that statement. It’s a great mattress for side sleepers because it is soft and pressure-relieving. This mattress has the classic memory foam feel, and it is a good choice for couples because it does not allow motion to be disturbed.

Does An Ikea Mattress Come Rolled Up?

Hidrasund Pocket Sprung Mattress Review

The HIDRASUND is IKEA’s top end pocket sprung mattress model with a mix of synthetic and natural fibres – and we like to start with the best first. The king-size mattress has just 600 pocket springs and an additional layer of micro springs as the upholstery. The main layer of pocket springs uses a coir pad beneath it, which is then covered in wool wadding and cotton.

These Micro springs are then placed on top and have a layer of latex on the top. There’s no detail on the blend, depth, or type of latex used in this model, which is a shame. The Latex information is not available so that you are able to compare the foam and determine its firmness. Based on the texture, we would assume it to be 70kg.

It can be rotated, but a single-sided mattress is not likely to last as long as a double-sided one. It seems strange to have a coir insulator pad underneath the spring system, as this offers you the sleeper no benefit at all.

It would make far more sense on top of the main spring unit to help add support and create a breathable layer. This should be on the opposite side of the spring unit to protect and encase them. I know IKEA state this is there for breathability but, given the cover is a polyester mix (which is heat retentive compared to Natural fibres) where the breathability is most needed, it seems a bit misplaced.

When you lie on the mattress’s perimeter, it is almost impossible to miss. Perimeter support is usually provided by a thin steel frame and then a layer of firmer pocket springs. However, we believe in IKEA’s case they have opted for a far thicker bar and kept the spring tension the same all over. Although this is likely to protect the warranty of 25 years, it feels excessive and uncomfortable.

We thought that it was a trap when we tried it for the first time, but it isn’t.

The finish and ticking of the mattress are of basic quality, especially given its near PS700 price tag. The side panels and handles are a cotton mix which is detailed as 53% linen, 47% viscose/rayon. Machine side stitched means that the pocket springs do not attach to the side panels as in the traditional pocket spring model. We now have bulging at the sides.

The sides of the mattress bulge when you sit on them. This is because they are only machine stitched, not side stitched, which compromises the stability of the bed if you’re an edge sleeper. It is made of a blend of polyester and imitation tufting.

This model is not expensive. However, it could be a good option if the cost of a 2-sided mattress was increased.

Sweet Night Sunkiss Mattress

The Sweet Night Sunkiss is an affordable flippable mattress with a soft side and a firm side. The soft side is best for side sleepers, while back and stomach sleepers should be happier on the firm side. The soft side has a top layer of gel memory foam for cooling comfort, while the firm side is made of high-density poly foam for support.

Summary

IKEA mattress are affordable and offer a good value. The material choices, layer thickness, design, and overall profile of both mattresses I tested leave something to be desired in terms of performance. While I do appreciate IKEA’s objective to offer inexpensive mattresses I feel like there are better mattresses for the money elsewhere.
