Josef Schwarz, Dieter’s father was a partner in 1930s fruit wholesalers and helped to develop the business into a larger seller of food. He stayed on with A. Lidl, his business partner, until his death.
After Josef’s death, his son Dieter took over control of the company, becoming CEO and expanding the grocery stores’ presence beyond Germany into other parts of Europe, which has been the core strategy of the business for decades.
Lidl opened stores in the first place thanks to slow expansion. Lidl cannot be listed on the stockmarket because of this.
Lidl’s stores, which are much smaller than other retailers, have fewer employees and more staff. This allowed the company to make its own investments while also maintaining ownership.
Lidl’s expansion strategy and capital allocation is not the only reason for concern. It has also been reported that shares in company share are shared between two organisations, making it difficult for outsiders get an accurate picture of how the company does.

Will Lidl Ever Go Public?

Where else can you put your money than Lidl?
Not being able to invest in Lidl stock is disappointing, as the parent company Schwarz Gruppe is worth billions.
There are, however, other competitors who trade publicly in the low price grocery industry.
Food Lion, a grocery store chain operating in 10 US states (mid-Atlantic/southern regions), Food Lion was purchased in 1970 by Ahold Delhaize. Kroger – Kroger was created in 1898 and it is today the biggest US supermarket. It ranks 23rd among Fortune 500’s most important US corporations. In 2020, it reported a record $122 million revenue. Kroger stock is available under the stock symbol KR.
Walmart – Walmart’s Great Value store brand allows it to compete with other grocery stores by offering low prices. It also sells just about any product you can think of. Walmart is listed on the NYSE with the stock symbol “WMT”.
