Best High Chairs
How to choose the right high chair
The best high chair for you
It’s important to choose the right highchair for you family. To find the right high chair for your family, consider the following:
You need to consider how much space you have. Your ability to reach the chair from one side to another. For those with small kitchens, you may prefer a lightweight model. This could be a portable high-chair that can attach directly to your table or boosters for attaching to your dining room chairs.
You can use the chair for how long. It depends on what type of chair he has, it may be possible for him to use it until he is at least two years old. Many high chairs can easily be converted from an infant seat into a booster for toddlers and finally to a chair.
You will be amazed at how easy it is to clean a high chair. Your baby will learn how to eat by himself as a toddler. High chairs that are easy to clean, as there’s bound to be spills or crumbs, will come in handy. To make cleanup easy, consider a highchair that features removable or washable parts.
The tray type. Can be adjusted? Can be removed Do they wash well in the dishwasher? You want a sturdy, removable and wide option with easy cleaning.
You can easily transport the highchair. For families that have smaller kitchens, this is particularly important. Some traditional models are not easy to store, which means they’ll take up coveted space in your kitchen and dining room. Add it to your list if you value storage.
Comfort. It is unlikely that a baby will be interested in meals if they are not comfortable. Baby will be more comfortable if there is padding that can be washed easily or a seat with a good shape.
Our Pick
IKEA’s Antilop High Chair is the most functional and lightweight high-chair. It can be used in a variety of ways, including as a portable, light chair that you can clean easily, unlike high chairs which cost over ten times as much.
At 7.9 pounds, the IKEA Antilop is much lighter, smaller, and easier to move around than most high chairs but still sturdy, durable, and comfortable. The smooth, plastic-and steel construction of the IKEA Antilop is functional and simple. It doesn’t have any crumb-catching or grime-collecting crevices like other high chairs. This chair has a slightly higher capacity than many others but is still suitable for larger kids. While assembly is straightforward, it’s not as simple as some of its competitors. The price, at around $20 currently, is impressively low, but you’ll have to buy the chair in person at IKEA or else pay extra for shipping.

The Tests We Did
Test your taste buds: Emilia is hard at work testing high-chairs.
To start, I timed the two-person assembly of each of the 13 high chairs, noting any particular difficulties or frustrations. This process consumed three and a half hours of my life. After measuring each chair’s footprint, I considered the ease of folding, rolling, and lifting them out of their way during meals.
I then spent 26 hours evaluating the high chairs in everyday conditions with my two daughters, using each chair for at least two meals, and using the chairs that worked best for dozens of meals. The ease or difficulty of getting Emilia (7 months old), my little testing assistant into each high chair was something I noticed. It also made it difficult to clean up after her regular meals, even when she had spread avocados on every surface. Also, I checked how Elise, my nearly-3 year old daughter fit into each chair. When the chair was adjustable or convertible to make it work for preschoolers or larger children, that option was also available. I tested this out with Elise.
One of our favorite high chairs is the Fisher Price booster. Another one we like are IKEA’s basic but very functional Stokke Tripp Trapps. The Baby. Bjorn high chair (third left from bottom) was once a choice, but is now discontinued.
Along with going through the four-weeks of everyday cleaning, I ran controlled cleaning tests on each chair to find out how challenging it was to get rid of any crumbs, liquid, or goop. For the first time, I placed a cup full of crushed Goldfish crackers over each chair. A baby was also in the seats to help me see the extent of the crumbs and the difficulty of vacuuming the chairs. A 4-ounce can of sweet potato puree was spread on top of each chair. 1/4 cup of grapefruit juice was then poured into the chairs. Again, the baby was in the seat to assist with the mess making. I left the resulting creations overnight and cleaned them up in the morning using either a dishwasher, a washing machine, or hand scrubbing (and sometimes all three), depending on what worked best with each chair. Some chairs required a lot of effort to remove and then reassemble. This testing was completed in 10 hours.
Our Choice
IKEA Antlop The most comfortable high chair.
IKEA Antilop
With its smooth plastic seat and tray that is rounded and smooth, this high chair is much easier to clean than other models and costs only $20. Although it is light, the chair is durable and easy to use. It stacks easily with the tray removed (great for parents of twins or closely spaced kids, or for daycares), and it’s a breeze to assemble or take apart for storage or travel. It is very versatile, even though it does not have the standard features of a high-chair designer such as a different height setting or a recliner seat back.
Additional pillow available
This low-cost back pillow attaches easily to high chairs and has a washable cover to resist common stains.
IKEA: $20*
Antilop has the best combination of features that make it easy to clean. The Antilop doesn’t have hard-to reach places that allow liquids to pool like other modular chairs like the Graco Blossom 4in-1 Seating System Fisher Price 4in-1 High Chair. This round-shaped seat is entirely made from plastic. There are no cracks, crannies or seams in which grime could hide. The seat is completely made without any fabric. It can be placed in the dishwasher. Safety straps that are attached to the tray by Antilop can also be removed and tossed in the wash machine. To clean the entire chair, you can take it outside with a hose. It is important to keep a high-chair clean by using less.
The competition
OXO Tot’s Seedling High Chair with 5 height settings was the best of our adjustable chairs. This sturdy, no-nonsense, relatively inexpensive (currently about $120) chair has a streamlined look and is relatively easy to care for, but we found it harder to clean, heavier, and bulkier than our top picks. The Seedling chair stayed put when its four wheels were locked. This was unlike any of the other options. It did a good job during our tests. The seat cover, although easy to take off and dry, was not able to dry properly. It is 25 pounds heavy and bulky. The tray also took on water from the sink when it was cleaned. Seedling makes a wonderful choice if you have taller countertops or a high breakfast table and require a height-adjustable chair.
Joovy Nook, which costs $120 (as of this writing), is unique in that it opens up to one side and swings out. That way caregivers don’t have to lift it to put it back on while the baby sits. This design is much more user-friendly than traditional high chairs that come with a tray and have to be taken off. (Our top pick, the IKEA Antilop, also has trays that stay in place while you slide the baby in or out.) You can also fold the Nook with just one hand, and it will lean against the wall. However, the worst part about the Nook? It’s difficult to take off the seat cushion in order to deep clean it. You. YouTube video I was able to remove the virus, although it wasn’t something that I would want to repeat.
Fisher-Price’s 4 in 1 Total Clean Highchair, usually $140, was newly released in 2016. The modular structure of this chair includes many parts, each stacked one on the other. It can be adjusted for different heights. This chair can be used in a variety of ways, including as a high-back chair for adults, space-saver chairs, booster seats, and youth chairs. The Total Clean has a seat, safety straps, and both a tray and an insert that can go right in the dishwasher. In our tests, it did feel great to just put all of that in my dishwasher’s bottom rack and press the start button, but those weren’t the only parts of the chair we had to clean. All liquid, food, and crumb fell through my removable spacer, booster seat, and into the seat of the youth-chair. It remained linked to the base. And even with the wheels locked, this chair slid around my floor quite a bit.
The Graco Bloom 4-in-1 seat system Graco Blossom is about $190. It is similar in design to the Fisher-Price Total Clean. Also, it’s a modular, stacked chair that offers similar versatility to the Fisher-Price Total clean. Because only the trays and not the entire chair can be washed in the dishwasher, the Fisher-Price Total Clean makes it more difficult to clean. Grape juice made it to the bottom of the seat during testing. If a parent removed the low-slung high chair seat, the mess could go unnoticed. Parents can adjust how high the footrest is by inserting slots into their feet. In our tests however, we found that food could get in and it was hard to lift them out. This chair is among the most popular modular high chair options on Amazon, but we recommend our picks and even the first few competitors before it.
Ingenuity Trio-3-in-1 High Chair was one of Consumer Reports’ top picks in 2015. It also ranks among the top high chairs on Amazon as well as at other retailers such Walmart and Babies”R”Us. Although it was the cheapest modular chair that we tested at $100 (at the time of our review), the price did seem a bit more affordable than comparable models. The tray was slightly tricky to slide on: Several times I thought it was secured and it wasn’t, so my baby was able to push it right off herself. Like other models with wheels, it slid across my wood floor and even though the wheels were securely locked. We used the Ingenuity as a kids chair. It was as awkward and difficult as any other model. And although the footrest is clearly not meant to be worn by preschoolers, my daughter tried it. Ingenuity still outperformed the other modular chairs, and no liquid got into the bottom seat.
The Graco Duo Diner LX Highchair, which costs $150, is a modular, lightweight chair. It doesn’t attempt to be a youth chair. The bottom of the chair is not covered with sticky liquid, so there’s no hiding place. The other downside is that the high chair itself feels more like a car than any of the other modular seats, making it more difficult to get off and toss into the sink. The feetrest and footrest adjustment slots are the hardest to clean.
The Phil&Teds Poppy Highchair is reminiscent of The Jetsons. At $120, it’s a reasonable price. It has Aerocore seat covers that aren’t visible. There are many gaps and crannies in the seat frame. These slots collected juice spilled from our test and made it difficult to clean. Parents should remove the seatcover regularly to avoid problems. In addition to stumbling our toes hard on the chairs legs, our husbands and I both did it twice. Also the shoulder straps of our infant fell off their shoulders when we crossed our backs as instructed in the manual. Another thing to be aware of: Although Amazon claims that it is from Aerocore, the manual recommends that you wash the Aerocore cover with soapy water. Turned out that it wasn’t a good idea to put the cover in the dishwasher it warped when I did so.

Best high chair overall: Graco table2table. Best transitional high chair: Peg Perego Siesta.

High-quality wooden high chairs are durable and can be used for a long time. High chairs with wood finishes can be easily cleaned using warm water. This is great for parents who are busy. The chair can hold more weight than metal or plastic, which increases its durability.
How do I get started with a highchair?
Most recommend waiting until a baby is 6 months old before using a high chair. It’s a good place to start. However, your baby will need to be ready for the high chair. Every child is unique and develops at their own pace.
