Headquarters

McDonald’s announced plans to relocate its global headquarters from Chicago’s West Loop to the Near West Side on June 13. The structure, measuring 608,000 square feet, was opened June 4, 2018. It is located on the site where Harpo Productions used to be. This was also where The Oprah Winfrey Show (and other Harpo productions) were taped. [7][8]

The McDonald’s former headquarters complex, McDonald’s Plaza, is located in Oak Brook, Illinois. The former Oak Brook headquarters, as well as the stabling area for Paul Butler (the founder), are located on its site. [148] McDonald’s moved into the Oak Brook facility from an office within the Chicago Loop in 1971. [149]

Restaurants that “Create Your Flavor”

McDonald’s has tried new restaurants and a gourmet burger concept from 2015 through 2016. It was inspired by other popular gourmet restaurants like Shake Shack and Grill’d. It was rolled out for the first time in Australia during the early months of 2015 and expanded to China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Arabia and New Zealand, with ongoing trials in the US market. In dedicated “Create Your Taste” (CYT) kiosks, customers could choose all ingredients including type of bun and meat along with optional extras. CYT food was served to the table on wooden boards, fries in wire baskets, and salads in china bowls with metal cutlery at a higher price. Create Your Taste was discontinued in November 2016 and replaced with “Signature Crafted Recipes”, which is more cost-effective and cheaper. [52]

How Do I Know Which Restaurants Are Participating In Mobile Ordering?

  • When you enable location services, Mobile Order & Pay in McDonald’s will be available to you when you are within five miles of a McDonald’s that has Mobile Order & Pay.
  • Within the location map, after selecting a restaurant icon, selecting the white detail box will also indicate if Mobile Order & Pay is available at a particular location. You will see “Order Here”, in black, at the bottom, when the participating restaurant has been selected. This allows you to choose it and start the order. If not, “Order Here” will appear muted out, indicating that Mobile Order & Pay is not enabled at that location.

International Menu Variations

McDonald’s Menu are different in their countries. Restaurants in several countries, particularly in Asia, serve soup. The chain’s local variation from their standard menu is an identifier. It is used either to comply with regional food restrictions (such the ban on beef consumption in India), or to offer foods that are more common in the region (such McRice (meatball) in Indonesia or Ebi Burger (prawn) in Singapore or Japan).

McDonald’s also sells beer in Germany and other Western European countries. McDonald’s New Zealand sells meat pie after its local affiliate McDonald’s New Zealand partly relaunched Georgie Pie, the fast-food chain that it acquired in 1996. Tzatziki sauce is added to the Big Mac hamburger in Greece. [39]

In the United States and Canada, after limited trials on a regional basis, McDonald’s began offering in 2015[40] and 2017,[41] respectively, a partial breakfast menu during all hours its restaurants were open. All-day breakfast was phased out from menus during the COVID-19 pandemic. [42]

What Is Mcdonald’S Doing To Help Prevent The Spread Of Covid-19?

Customers and employees are at the top of our priorities. Our restaurant staff have been trained to follow standard sanitation protocols as part of McDonald’s response against coronavirus.

  • Increased frequency in cleaning and sanitizing high-touchpoint surfaces.
  • Continued our high standards of promoting regular and thorough handwashing and reminding our crew members of our best practices for personal hygiene,
  • As an addition to regular handwashing, increase the usage of alcohol-based hand soaps where possible
  • Trained our crew members of current social distancing procedures,
  • Implemented contactless operations,
  • Closed all PlayPlaces and seating areas in a majority of dining rooms, and
  • Any employee who becomes ill must be allowed to work from home.

Additionally, we are providing scenario-based guidance to restaurant management on how to work through various COVID-19 related situations, and communicating health and safety guidance updates from federal health authorities. We will continue to evaluate all safety measures currently in place, and adjust accordingly as we remain focused on the health and safety of restaurant employees and you, our customers.

Space Exploration

McDonald’s and NASA explored an advertising agreement for a planned mission to the asteroid 449 Hamburga; however, the spacecraft was eventually cancelled. [179]

McDonald’s entered its longest partnership ever with Chip Ganassi Racing during the 2010 season. They sponsored the No. 1 Chevrolet driven by Jamie McMurray until his final race in the 2019 Daytona 500. McDonald’s has moved to CGR’s number 18. 43 of Kyle Larson (whom the company sponsored up to his suspension in 2020[183]) and also had an exclusive partnership with Richard Petty Motorsports, No. Bubba Wallace drove 43 Chevrolets in 2019 and 2020. [185][186] McDonald’s continued working with the No. In 2021, Ross Chastain took over the No. 42 position and joined Wallace’s 23XI Racing team as a founding partner. [187][188]

Automatization

McDonald’s attempted to substitute employees by using electronic kiosks that could take orders or accept money since the 1990s. McDonald’s tested the first “E-Clerks”, in 1999. They were located in suburban Chicago and Wyoming, Illinois. The devices could “save on staffers” while attracting higher purchase volumes than employees. [73]

In 2013, the University of Oxford estimated that in the succeeding decades, there was a 92% probability of food preparation and serving to become automated in fast food establishments. In 2016, McDonald’s electronic “Create Your Taste” kiosks could be seen at some international restaurants, where customers could order custom-made meals. As employees pushed for higher wages in the late-2010s, some believed that fast food companies such as McDonald’s would use the devices to cut costs for employing individuals. [75]

In September 2019, McDonald’s purchased an AI-based start-up Apprente for replacing human servers with voice-based technology in its US drive-throughs. [76]

Strikes

McDonald’s employees have been on strike on several occasions over their pay. Most of those on strike want to get $15.00. [88] When interviewed about the strikes occurring, former McDonald’s CEO Ed Rensi stated: “It’s cheaper to buy a $35,000 robotic arm than it is to hire an employee who’s inefficient making $15 an hour bagging french fries” with Rensi explaining that increasing employee wages could possibly take away from entry-level jobs. [89] However, according to Easterbrook, increasing wages and benefits for workers saw a 6% increase in customer satisfaction when comparing 2015’s first quarter data to the first quarter of 2016, with greater returns seen as a result. [89]

In September 2017, two British McDonald’s stores agreed to a strike over zero-hours contracts for staff. Two stores, in Crayford and Cambridge were the focus of picket lines. The strike was supported by the Leader of the Opposition Jeremy Corbyn. [90][91]

Criticism

In the late 1980s, Phil Sokolof, a millionaire businessman who had suffered a heart attack at the age of 43, took out full-page newspaper ads in New York, Chicago, and other large cities accusing McDonald’s menu of being a threat to American health, and asking them to stop using beef tallow to cook their french fries. [193]

A small group called London Greenpeace distributed leaflets, entitled “What’s wrong With McDonald’s?” in 1990. They criticized the company’s environmental and health records, as well as its labor practices. After two activists refused to back down, the corporation sued the activists for libel. This led to the McLibel Case, one of the most complex civil cases in English civil law. In several countries, a documentary about the McLibel trial has been shown. [194]

Eric Schlosser’s 2001 book Fast Food Nation contained criticisms of McDonald’s business practices. McDonald’s was accused of using its political power to boost its profits, at the cost of the health of workers and their social circumstances. McDonald’s advertising techniques, which target children, were also questioned by the book. While the book did mention other fast-food chains, it focused primarily on McDonald’s. [195]

Vegetarian groups, mostly Hindus and Buddhists, sued McDonald’s in 2002 for misleadingly presenting their French fries as vegetarian when they were made with beef broth. [196] Ska-P, a Spanish group released a song titled McDollar in the same year. It was a critique of McDonald’s. [citation needed]

Despite objections from the company, Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary added the term McJob in 2003. [197] The term was defined as “a low-paying job that requires little skill and provides little opportunity for advancement”. [198] Merriam-Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary also contains the word “McMansion”, a critical, pejorative term used to describe an overly large, ostentatious, sometimes poorly designed or constructed house, often found in a suburb or in new developments on traditionally rural land. McMansions are often built in multiples that are difficult to distinguish from one another, like assembly-line factory parts or fast-food hamburgers. [199][200]

Morgan Spurlock’s 2004 documentary film Super Size Me claimed that McDonald’s food was contributing to the increase of obesity in society and that the company was failing to provide nutritional information about its food for its customers. McDonald’s made the announcement six weeks after the movie premiered that the Super Size option was being eliminated and it would be creating an adult Happy Meal. There was a documentary called Fat Head, which pointed out inconsistencies in Super Size Me. [citation needed]

An unapproved McDonald’s Video Game was launched online by Molleindustria, an Italian company. It is a parody of the business practices of the corporate giant, taking the guise of a tycoon style business simulation game. The game lets the user play the role of McDonald’s CEO. They can choose whether to employ controversial methods like plowing through rainforests and genetically altering cow feed. McDonald’s released a statement dissociating itself from this game. [201]

In April 2020, McDonald’s apologized after footage showing a notice that was being displayed inside one of its restaurants in China saying that “black people are not allowed to enter. “[203]

In October 2020, McDonald’s Azerbaijan was criticised for its Facebook and Instagram posts approving of Azerbaijan’s actions against Armenia in Nagorno Karabakh. [204] McDonald’s outlets are still available in Armenia. However, they were not franchises for the global brand as of January 2020. [205][206]

Histories

The present corporation credits its founding to franchised businessman Ray Kroc on April 15, 1955. Although this was the 9th McDonald’s location, it was rebuilt and rebuilt in 1984. Kroc is known to have been an aggressive business partner and drove the McDonald’s brothers from the restaurant industry. [24]

Kroc and the McDonald brothers fought for control of the business, as documented in Kroc’s autobiography. In 1961, he purchased the McDonald brothers’ equity in the company and began the company’s worldwide reach. [25] The sale cost Kroc $2.7 million, a huge sum during that time. [24] The San Bernardino restaurant was eventually torn down in 1971, and the site was sold to the Juan Pollo chain in 1998. The Juan Pollo restaurant is located here. It also houses a Route 66 and McDonald’s museum. [26] With the expansion of McDonald’s into many international markets, the company has become a symbol of globalization and the spread of the American way of life. Its prominence has made it a frequent topic of public debates about obesity, corporate ethics, and consumer responsibility.

Critique: Company Reactions

McDonald’s responded to the public’s pressure and introduced “Not bad, for a McJob” as its new slogan on its posters. McJob was first used in mid-80s[197]. It later became a popular term for unskilled, low-paid work that offers little in terms of security and prospects. McDonald’s disputes this definition of McJob. In 2007, the company launched an advertising campaign with the slogan “Would you like a career with that?” on Irish television, asserting that its jobs have good prospects.

The fast-food company changed the supplier of its coffee beans as well as milk in an attempt to address consumer concerns about food origins. Steve Easterbrook, chief executive of UK, stated that British consumers have become more concerned about the source, quality and ethics of food and drinks they purchase. [208] McDonald’s has switched to coffee beans from Rainforest Alliance certified stocks in an effort to reach the ethical consumer market. Additionally, in response to pressure, McDonald’s UK started using organic milk supplies for its bottled milk and hot drinks, although it still uses conventional milk in its milkshakes, and in all of its dairy products in the United States. [210] According to a report published by Farmers Weekly in 2007, the quantity of milk used by McDonald’s could have accounted for as much as 5 percent of the UK’s organic milk output. [211]

McDonald’s announced in May 2008 that, in the United States and Canada, it has switched to using cooking oil that contains no trans fats for its french fries, and canola-based oil with corn and soy oils, for its baked items, pies and cookies, by end of 2018. [212]

With regard to acquiring chickens from suppliers who use CAK/CAS methods of slaughter, McDonald’s says that it needs to see more research “to help determine whether any CAS system in current use is optimal from an animal welfare perspective. “[213]

Business Model

All the land where its restaurants are located is owned by the company, estimated at $16 billion to $18 million. [citation needed] The company earns a significant portion of its revenue from rental payments from franchisees. Between 2010 and 2015, rent payments accounted for one fifth of company revenue. [137] In recent times, there have been calls to spin off the company’s U.S. holdings into a potential real estate investment trust, but the company announced at its investor conference on November 10, 2015, that this would not happen. Steve Easterbrook, CEO of the company, stated that the REIT option was too risky for the company’s business model. [138]

In the United Kingdom and Ireland, the business model differs from that of the United States in that less than 30% of restaurants are franchised. The majority of these restaurants remain under the control of the company. McDonald’s trains its franchisees and management at Hamburger University located at its Chicago headquarters. McDonald’s Restaurants are owned and operated in other countries by joint ventures between McDonald’s Corporation, other local governments, or entities. [141]

Fast Food Nation (2001) by Eric Schlosser states that nearly eight out of every eight Americans have been employed at one time or another by McDonald’s. Employees are encouraged by McDonald’s Corp. to maintain their health by singing along to their favorite songs in order to relieve stress, attending church services in order to have a lower blood pressure, and taking two vacations annually in order to reduce risk for myocardial infarction. Fast Food Nation claims that McDonald’s USA is the biggest private playground operator in America and the number one purchaser of potatoes, beef, pork, meat, and other foods. The selection of meats McDonald’s uses varies to some extent based on the culture of the host country. [143]

The company eliminated value-based meals from its menu in 2021 to make way for higher-priced options. [144][145][146][147]

2006 Redesign

In 2006, McDonald’s introduced its “Forever Young” brand by redesigning all of its restaurants, the first major redesign since the 1970s. [61][62] It resembles a coffee shop, with wooden tables, faux-leather chairs, and muted colors; the red was muted to terracotta, the yellow was shifted to golden for a more “sunny” look, and olive and sage green were added. For a warmer feel, there is less plastic and much more brick and wooden. Modern hanging lights give it a soft glow. Flat-screen TVs and Wi-Fi are common in many restaurants. Other upgrades include double drive-thrus, flat roofs instead of the angled red roofs, and fiber glass instead of wood. The restaurants now have “semiswooshes”, which are half of a gold arch, similar to the Nike Swoosh. [63]

Different types of restaurants

Most standalone McDonald’s restaurants offer both counter service and drive-through service, with indoor and sometimes outdoor seating. [44] Drive-Thru, Auto-Mac, Pay and Drive, or “McDrive” as it is known in many countries, often has separate stations for placing, paying for, and picking up orders, though the latter two steps are frequently combined;[44] it was first introduced in Sierra Vista, Arizona in 1975,[45] following the lead of other fast-food chains. The first such restaurant in Britain opened at Fallowfield, Manchester in 1986. [46]

In 1994, McDonald’s attempted Hearth Express, a prototype specializing in homestyle takeout meals. Among the fare offered were meatloaf, fried chicken, and baked ham. The experiment began in Darien in Illinois and was completed in one year. [47]

Products

McDonald’s primarily sells hamburgers and other types of chicken. They also offer chicken sandwiches, French fries as well as soft drinks, breakfast items, desserts, and various kinds of chicken. In most markets, McDonald’s offers salads and vegetarian items, wraps and other localized fare. On a seasonal basis, McDonald’s offers the McRib sandwich. Some speculate the seasonality of the McRib adds to its appeal. [27]

The chain sells certain items in the United States as well on a local basis. For example, Hatch Green Chile Double cheeseburgers are only available in New Mexico’s southwestern states. [28][29]

You can choose to have your product delivered to you or take it home. “Dine-in” meals are provided on a plastic tray with a paper insert on the floor of the tray. Take-out meals come in brown paper bags that are branded McDonald’s. Both cases include individual items that are either wrapped or packed as needed.

Since Steve Easterbrook became CEO of the company, McDonald’s has streamlined the menu which in the United States contained nearly 200 items. McDonald’s has streamlined its menu to include healthier choices and eliminated high fructose corn syrup (from hamburger buns). Chicken McNuggets have been reformulated with artificial preservatives. [30] The chicken skin, oil, and citric acids found in Chicken McNuggets were replaced by pea starch or rice starch. [31]

In September 2018, McDonald’s USA announced that they no longer use artificial preservatives, flavors and colors entirely from seven classic burgers sold in the U.S., including the hamburger, cheeseburger, double cheeseburger, McDouble, Quarter Pounder with Cheese, double Quarter Pounder with Cheese and the Big Mac. However, pickles made from artificial preservatives will continue to be available. Customers can opt not to get pickles along with their burgers. [34][35]

In November 2020, McDonald’s announced McPlant, a plant-based burger, along with plans to develop additional meat alternative menu items that extend to chicken substitutes and breakfast sandwiches. After the success of Beyond Meat’s plant-based meat replacements, this announcement was made.

In March 2015, McDonald’s workers in 19 U.S. cities filed 28 health and safety complaints with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration which allege that low staffing, lack of protective gear, poor training and pressure to work fast has resulted in injuries. According to the complaints, management instructed workers that mustard and mayonnaise were used for treating burn injuries because they didn’t have enough first-aid supplies. Workers were assisted by the Fight for $15 labor group in filing their complaints. [96]
