What is the USPS Orientation Process?
Although each USPS orientation may be the same, you will find some variations depending on where your are located and for which job you were hired.
On the first day, you’ll watch videos and listen to your orientation leader speak about general USPS policies. This course covers diversity, ethics and USPS rules.
Videos about the USPS may be viewed as well. For example, you may learn how mail gets to warehouses and how it is sorted.
Day two will feature a speaker from American Postal Workers Union, and a chance for you to sign up if you are interested.
Videos will also be shown and training on safety procedures provided. This could include how to prevent accidents and lift heavy boxes safely.
The second day will be spent taking badge photographs, filling out extra paperwork for hiring, and being sworn in as an employee of the federal government.
Day 3 is usually the last day you’ll be in a classroom for orientation. This is the day that you may complete classroom driver instruction. Like the earlier days, it will require watching videos and hearing lectures.
You’ll learn about things like how to prevent rollaways, how to prevent accidents, and how to be aware of your surroundings when driving.
Following your classroom orientation, you’ll need to schedule a time to complete your driving test. When you schedule will depend on your local Learning Development and Diversity center.
Some people may be able to pass the driving test as soon as they have completed classroom orientation. While others might wait several weeks or longer before taking it.
USPS’ driving test is held on a closed course. Driving a Long Life Vehicle or Flex-Fuel Vehicle is required for the driving test.
You’ll also practice delivering and picking up mail from mounted mailboxes on the course. You’ll also learn how to parallel park your vehicle and reverse it up onto a loading dock.
After your driving test, you’ll shadow a current postal worker. You’ll be able to practice setting up mail vehicles for their route and capping mail.
Third, you will attend academy. This training is for mail carriers. During this training, you’ll practice casing and labeling mail.
What is the USPS orientation schedule?
No USPS schedule is set. It is possible because each local Learning Development and Diversity center (LDDC) operates in its own independent way.
For three days of classroom orientation, you’ll need to show up at the LLDC in good time.
The days seem to be 8 hours long on paper. They usually last around 5 hours, but it looks like that is the case in practice.
The classroom orientation is over. You should be available at all times for any other obligations such as the driving test or the carrier academy.
Each LLDC’s requirements are different. This means that you could complete some activities as soon as you have completed classroom orientation. Or you might need to wait several weeks. That’s why it’s best to keep your schedule as open as possible.
