Walmart appears to be the dominant retailer worldwide, surpassing Amazon.
International sales are extremely fierce in particular for discounted products. It’s particularly competitive in regions with high populations.
One might ask, “Is Walmart India or Delhi?” With so many stores across the globe including China. I’ve got the answer you’re looking for, and it’s not what you think.
How is Walmart referred to in India?
Flipkart, an Indian-founded online e-commerce site that Walmart purchased in 2018, can be found at Walmart India.
The company’s seemingly unlimitless resources allow them to be very selective in their entry into new markets.
This can sometimes be confusing, as different cultures and shoppers may not consider the American way of doing business to be the enjoyable, friendlier experience U.S. citizens enjoy.
For example, when Walmart entered the UK, they did so through the acquisition of the established Asda chain of grocery stores, rather than with Walmart stores.
Therefore, it is not surprising that they choose a different path than the opening of a Supercenter in a nation with an average population density of 1,100 residents per square mile.
What is Flipkart exactly?
Flipkart is a startup founded in Bangalore, India in 2007 by two ex-Amazon employees.
It initially followed Amazon’s strategy of online book sales but soon expanded and acquired other mobile retailers such PhonePe and Myntra.
Walmart beat Amazon in 2018’s bidding for Flipkart’s controlling share – 77 per cent for $16 Billion and Walmart making $2 billion available for equity funding.
Walmart India and Delhi:
There are no Walmart Supercenters or Discount Stores within India. However, Indian customers can still buy their products.
That includes Flipkart’s website. The site and its affiliated apps, have an Amazon-meets-Wish feel.
There are many options available, starting with the homepage.
But if you’re looking for a brick-and-mortar experience in India and Delhi, there are options – but with a caveat.
If you want to buy at Walmart in India’s physical shops, then visit the Best Price Flipkart Warehouse location.
As I mentioned, there are nearly 30 locations throughout India, with one store about 51 miles from Delhi.
The wholesale warehouses you see are not for the everyday buyer.
They are instead for owners of neighborhood shops and MSMEs (micro-, small, and medium businesses).
These shops play an important role in India’s economy.
Many Indian families depend on them for their survival. They provide everything that they require in one location, and in an easily accessible place.
To shop at a Best Price Flipkart Wholesale, then, you must be a small business/store owner (or a shopper on their behalf), and you must join the membership club.
One way to think about it: When a person shops in a kirana, India, they are making indirect Walmart purchases if that store sources their goods from Flipkart Wholesale.
It begs the following question: What is India’s Walmart absence?
Indian laws largely prohibit foreign firms from entering the country, which in turn chokes out the current network of mom and pops.
Walmart exploits (or navigates depending on how you interpret it) loopholes in Indian law to still profit from India’s expanding population and economy.
Zweiten, there are reports that India’s middle class is steadily growing in size and becoming more mobile since 2008. However, the data shows something different, particularly at 2020.
In the wake of the worldwide Coronavirus pandemic, 32 million Indians were forced out of the middle-class. Meanwhile, 75 million more people are earning less than $2 a day.
India is the third largest economy in the world. However, nearly one-third its population are considered to be impoverished.
It’s difficult to imagine, then, that Walmart – even if India’s economic regulations did allow for greater foreign retail presence – would be able to operate something like a Supercenter.
Walmart had applied for permission from the Indian government in 2012 to open brand-name stores after economic regulation were relaxed.
But, it was a failure. Walmart made the right decision to “infiltrate” India as they did in 2018. They established their presence through existing retailers.
If you want to know more about Walmart, check out our other posts. They cover whether Walmart exists in Japan, NZ and UK.
Walmart India has no company-branded store. This is due to India’s strict laws regarding foreign retailers.
However, Walmart circumvented those laws by purchasing a controlling stake in the Indian-founded company Flipkart, an e-commerce and wholesale warehouse company.
Walmart’s worldwide growth continues, despite the many challenges of sporadic economic instability.
